Monsters of the Deep

Some people appear to be skeptical of the veracity of that terrifying video clip I linked to. I received this email from my good friend Brad, for those doubters:

So I didn't really believe the link you put on your site about the squids. But:

http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/octopus/chameleons.html

I'll start converting the basement into a squid shelter. As in, bomb shelter. Not as in animal shelter, where I'd keep orphaned squids.

That's good advice, and advice everyone should heed. I've tried to sound the warning bell with each new cephalopod terror alert I've seen, but I don't get the sense that people are taking this seriously. But maybe this is the thing to wake you people up. These are ninja powers! They take to land, and we're screwed.

I'm hoping Brad gets on that squid shelter double-time, because it might also need to be a shark shelter, too. Here's a recent actual, real photo* of the latest terror from the ocean's waters (click to see the full image):

hoo boy.

*Note = photo may not be real. This may, in fact, be key art for what will be the best shark film like, ever. Or at least since Deep Blue Sea.

White's Pink

Adidas is running a viral/video campaign for their Adicolor line, wherein they've commissioned artists and filmmakers to make short films based on a color. There appears not to be any stipulation that Adidas shoes actually show up in the videos. Which is good.

And brave. One wouldn't guess that creeping the hell out of your audience is a good way to sell shoes, and yet, Charlie White's entry, Pink, does exactly that.

I've been a huge fan of Charlie's work ever since I first saw his series In a Matter of Days, which smartly observes Los Angeles' class, race, and city mythos through a series of photographs depicting an alien invasion (many of which are further drawing on classic art and historical references).

His Pink video is pure Charlie through-and-through: a little sci-fi, a lot creepy, a bit of skewed sexuality, and an anthropomorphized child's toy thrown in the mix (often puppets, though in this case, it's an adorable teddy bear that somehow makes me think of Dabney Coleman. And no, I can't explain why.). It's also beautifully shot, and features a fantastic song by the heretofore unknown-to-me Greg Weeks.

Check it out by clicking on the teddy bear below:

Terrorist Alert Frenzy!

Don't worry, Bob, there's just a giant mushroom inside this box. Two recent news items make for nice terrorist hysteria companion pieces:

In the first, a number of Florida residents called the FBI and "other emergency services" after seeing a plane pulling a banner that said "6/6/06 You have been warned." The banner was a promotion for the upcoming remake of The Omen, but apparently, a number of people thought it was a promotion for an upcoming terrorist attack.

"It made me feel really creepy, especially in this day and age," said Washington, who works at Ocean Walk Resort. Noting that June 6 is a Tuesday, she drew the connection to Sept. 11, 2001, also a Tuesday.

And who wouldn't jump to make the Tuesday connection? In any event, I think this tells us that someone needs to work on their marketing skills. I'm just not certain whether that's terrorists or 20th Century Fox.

In the latter story, Ohio residents got freaked out and called the bomb squad to handle Super Mario power-up blocks left around the town by some teenager girls. Which is understandable enough, considering the likelihood, as Joystiq points out, "that Osama bin Laden snuck in overnight and placed bombs wrapped in gold wrapping paper in highly-visible public places."
