Please, don't anger the squid.

Everybody's seen it now, I'm sure - the first photos of a live giant squid.

They estimate the squid to be 26 feet in length; the largest on record is 59 feet in length. That's ten times as tall as me, with twice as many appendages. Toe to toe (sucker?), that giant squid is sure to kick my ass in a fight.

So what do they do while photographing this aquatic monster? THEY TEAR ONE OF ITS TENTACLES OFF. If I can briefly call your attention to the fact that the total cephalopod biomass now exceeds that of humans (check the bottom of the first page), I think one thing is clear: We do not want angry cephalopods.

If these things learn to walk and breathe out of the water and/or talk to dolphins, we're screwed.

Update:This Grady Hendrix fellow seems to know exactly what I'm talking about, and Slate points out that in addition to giant squid, there's an even more terrifying Colossal Squid, with "a larger beak than the giant squid and hooks on its tentacles." Humans? Doomed.

Too many bad horror films.

I've been waylaid by a vicious cold for the past week. In the middle of the night, I was rather violently awakened from my slumber when my throat began spasming in an attempt to expel the mucous I was choking on (which, in my dream-state I was sure was an arrow through the throat, an experience that I'm sure repeated childhood viewings of Friday the 13th must be responsible for).

I managed to get back to sleep. When I woke this morning, I discovered that the headache that has taken residence above my right eye was still there, despite throwing different variations of Advil and maximum strength Tylenol at it. As I stood in the shower, half-asleep and melodramatic, I started to wonder if it wasn't a headache at all, but something that was going to kill me: an embolism, an aneurysm, or a tumor, perhaps - my mind raced through a couple of things quickly before I had this thought:

Oh, please don't let the Ring 2 be the last film I see before dying.
